The best AI SEO scanner checks what AI crawlers actually see
The best AI SEO scanner reads your site the way AI crawlers do: per-crawler robots.txt rules, llms.txt, sitemap, structured data and the raw HTML without JavaScript. LLM Scan runs those checks free, without an account, then tracks whether ChatGPT and Perplexity actually mention you on paid plans.
AI SEO scanners compared by approach
Most teams use two kinds of tool: a site-wide SEO crawler, and a check of what AI crawlers can read. Features and prices of other tools change often, so check their own pages before you choose.
| Tool | Approach | AI crawler rules | llms.txt | Tracks AI answers | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LLM Scan free scan | AI-crawler view of your homepage and discovery files | Yes, 6 AI crawlers by name | Yes, with quality rules | On paid plans, weekly | Free, no account |
| Classic technical SEO crawlers (for example Screaming Frog, Semrush Site Audit, Ahrefs Site Audit) | Site-wide crawl for search engine SEO issues | Depends on the tool; check its docs | Depends on the tool; check its docs | Not their core job | Check their pricing page |
| AI visibility platforms with a crawler audit (for example Peec AI) | Answer tracking first, with a technical audit alongside | Peec AI lists a crawlability audit across 40+ AI bots | Check their docs | Yes, on their paid plans | Check their pricing page |
| Manual checks (curl, robots.txt testers, Google's Rich Results Test) | One signal at a time | Only the user agents you test | By reading the file yourself | No | Free, your time |
What LLM Scan checks, and how it scores
The score is out of 100. A passed check earns its full points, a warning usually earns half and a fail earns none. 85 or more is rated AI-Ready.
- Crawlability (20 points)
- Your homepage returns HTTP 200 as HTML, robots.txt does not block it, the canonical tag matches the final URL and no AI crawler is blocked from the whole site.
- robots.txt (15 points)
- Rules for GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-Web, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, read per crawler. Blocks on public sections such as /blog, /docs or /pricing and formatting errors are flagged.
- llms.txt (15 points)
- /llms.txt exists, is served as text, has more than 200 characters, at least one heading and at least one absolute URL.
- Markdown support (15 points)
- Your homepage answers a request with Accept: text/markdown with a real Markdown version, not the same HTML.
- Sitemap (10 points)
- /sitemap.xml, or a sitemap listed in robots.txt, is valid XML and lists at least one URL.
- Semantic HTML (10 points)
- Title of 10–70 characters, meta description of 50–160, exactly one H1, no skipped heading levels, main/article/nav/footer landmarks, at least 200 words and few generic links such as “click here”.
- Structured data (10 points)
- Valid JSON-LD with an Organization or WebSite type, with no broken JSON-LD blocks.
- Content signals (5 points)
- A declared AI usage preference, such as a Content-Signal line, meta tag or header.
What the free scan does not do
- It analyses one page plus your discovery files, not your whole site.
- It does not run JavaScript, because most AI crawlers do not either.
- It does not check noindex tags or OpenAI's search crawler OAI-SearchBot; check those by hand, as the ChatGPT search guide explains.
- It does not tell you whether AI assistants mention you. Weekly tracking does.

AI SEO scanners: questions and answers
- What is the best AI SEO scanner?
- The one that checks what AI crawlers actually receive: per-crawler robots.txt rules, llms.txt, sitemap, structured data and the raw HTML without JavaScript. LLM Scan's free scan checks those 8 areas in about a minute without an account. If you also need to know whether AI assistants mention you, pick a tool that tracks the answers too.
- Is an AI SEO scanner different from a normal SEO audit?
- Partly. Both care about status codes, sitemaps and HTML. An AI SEO scanner also reads the robots.txt rules for AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot by name, checks llms.txt and Markdown access, and looks at the HTML the way a crawler that does not run JavaScript sees it.
- Does LLM Scan render JavaScript?
- No, on purpose. Most AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so the scan reads the HTML your server returns. If key text only appears after JavaScript runs, the scan shows the page as thin.
- How many pages does the free scan check?
- It analyses the page you submit, usually your homepage, plus your robots.txt, llms.txt and sitemap. For a site-wide crawl, use a classic SEO crawler alongside it.
- Does a high scan score mean ChatGPT will recommend me?
- No. The score says AI crawlers can read your site. Whether ChatGPT or Perplexity name you is a separate measurement, which LLM Scan's paid plans track every week.
- Is the scanner free?
- Yes. The technical scan is free and needs no account. Weekly tracking of AI answers and Google keywords is on paid plans, which start with a 14-day trial.
